In An Italian Diary, Alessia Petrolito reflects on her experience as a Black child growing up in Italy with her adopted parents. Her darker skin and afro full of coils were constant reminders of how different she looked from her friends and the people she loved. In the end, she finally reaches the point of accepting that she just might not belong.
When thinking of our own lives, the question in our open thread this week is this:
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED TO ACCEPT ABOUT YOURSELF?
It can be something physical, a personal experience or perhaps one of your weaknesses. We’re wondering what does self acceptance mean to you?
Sometimes judgements forge nuanced identities. I've learned that acceptance can be nuanced in itself. We act and learn through ideas; often time unlearning is the key to opening up.
I root for the underdog and sometimes I need to take a step back. Even underdogs can be mean. At the same time, I drive friends crazy because I anayse things too much. Now, I talk to myself about these vulnerabilities. I can accept that people do not deserve my judgement because they are good, poor, manipulative or a bully. They can be a mixture. Life is nuanced!
Thank you. I'd like to borrow your insightful comment: 'sometimes unlearning is the key to opening up" How right you are!

So true, Verbieann. Life is totally nuanced and sometimes our judgements can be misplaced.
Dear Verbieann, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and vulnerabilities.
